Defense Leads Lady Tigers to Victory in ‘Rumble on the River’
Despite being just a few days before Christmas, the Scotland County girls basketball team remained stingy. The Lady Tigers defense paved the way to another victory on Monday night at the Rumble on the River in Quincy, IL. The holiday hoops event hosted by John Wood Community College pitted SCR-I against the junior varsity squad from Quincy Notre Dame in the third day of a five-day schedule that hosted a number of contests between Illinois and Missouri schools.
SCR-I, a class 2 school in Missouri, took on the much larger Quincy school and fell behind 12-6 in the opening frame. Jamie Shaw had a pair of field goals to keep Scotland County close early on.
Ashley Tague put up six points in the second period to help SCR-I narrow the gap to 17-14 at the intermission. After a slow start, the SCR-I defense returned to form, holding Quincy to just five points in period number two.
Skyler Alderton hit a key three pointer and Shaw had four points during a third period rally that saw SCR-I pull ahead 23-21 with just eight minutes left to play.
Tague ensured SCR-I would not give up the lead, as she scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the fourth period, including a perfect four of four performance at the free throw line to ice the game late.
Scotland County’s defense held Notre Dame to just nine points combined in the second and third period to help secure the 35-29 victory.
Shaw chipped in 10 points to go along with Tague’s 18 as SCR-I improved to 6-2 on the season.
