Payson Seymour Ruins ĎRumble on the Riverí for Tigers

Monday was a no win situation for the Scotland County Tigers, and unfortunately they did just that. Heading into SCR-Iís second season of participating in the Rumble on the River Illinois versus Missouri holiday hoops event, the Tigers had little to gain courtesy of some last minute schedule adjustments.

Host John Wood Community College came up short on the number of Illinois teams set to play, forcing several schools across the river to send junior varsity squads to compete along with their varsity teams.

Unfortunately SCR-I drew one of those squads representing Payson Seymour. Coach Lance Campbell noted heading into Mondayís game, it was a tough spot, meaning if you are victorious, it isnít seen as a true win, because it is a JV team. And if you lose, people forget that it is the second team from a larger school than yours which likely played down as many varsity players as possible, and simply remember that you lost to someoneís jayvee.

The later was the case for the Tigers, who despite being desperate for a win, saw the Indians use big second and third period runs to post a 53-44 victory.

Scotland County jumped out on top 16-14 after the first period. Kasey Dial got off to a hot start, scoring seven first period points, including a three pointer.

The Tigers fell behind 26-23 at the break, managing just seven second quarter points. Dakota Wells connected from behind the arc and Brandon Garnett and Kyle Shelley each had a field goal as the Indians led by three at the break.

Seven was again the unlucky number for the Tigers, who matched the second quarter scoring out put again in the third period to allow Payson Semour to pull ahead 41-30.

Brock Bondurant scored seven points in the fourth period and Harley Stone added five points as the Tigers trimmed the deficit but it wasnít enough as the Indians prevailed 53-44.

No Tiger reached double figures in scoring as SCR-I was led by Bondurant and Dial who each finished with nine points. Shelley added eight points. The Tigers fell to 2-5 on the season. Payson Seymour was led in scoring by Alex Wiseman with 15.
