Lady Tigers Look to Reload in 2009 After Graduating Four Starters

A season after seeing six seniors dominate the rotation for the Scotland County girls varsity program, the Lady Tigers will have a whole new look in 2009. That look will be around in 2010 as well as the current edition of the SCR-I roster does not feature any seniors.

The later is a point that Coach Jaryt Hunziker is quick to point out.

ďWe are replacing a lot of good players, but we have all of these kids for the next two years or more, so we definitely have time on our side,Ē he said.

Despite graduating four starters, Scotland County still heads into the Novinger Tournament next week as the #1 seed.

Junior Ashley Tague is the lone returning starter from last yearís 16-12 squad that fell in the district championship game to Marceline. Tague averaged 6.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game during the 2008-09 season.

Hunziker will have to replace four starters and six of the top seven players from last yearís rotation.

Melissa Cotton was the teamís leading scorer at 9.85 points a game. She and Kaitlin Caldwell (9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest) were both all-conference performers in their final year for SCR-I. Also gone are starters Kelsey Frazier and Deidra Dochterman and key subs Valerie Oldham and Betsey Kittle.

Combined the six seniors accounted for 83% of the teamís offense last year.

Despite the departures, Hunziker is excited about the Lady Tigers youth movement, as the talented junior class saw more varsity playing time down the stretch in 2008-09 following a very successful junior varsity circuit.

Center Jamie Shaw worked her way into the rotation midway through the year and averaged 18 points and 1.9 rebounds in 15 games played.

Anna Duley was a key reserve for last yearís Lady Tigers, seeing action in 25 games averaging 1.2 points and one rebound per game.

Skyler Alderton and Catie Shalley complete the five-player junior class.

Sophomores Cali Holt, Kiley Frazier and Courtney Jackson will look to build on their successful freshman tours.

Alderton and Holt were the starting back court for the jayvee last year and likely will graduate to similar roles at the upper level in 2009-10.

Putnam County topped the Tri-Rivers Conference with a perfect 7-0 record last season. But the lady Midgets will have to replace three all-conference performers in Katie Steele, Hilary Mason and Jamie Mullinax, who all graduated after finishing among the top 10 players in the league according to TRC coaches.

Clark County may have the inside track to unseat the Midgets in 2009. The Lady Indians were 5-2 in league play last year and return all-conference performers Brooke Wheeler and Cady Flood for their senior seasons.

Knox County will have to replace first teamer Tessa Ramer, but fellow all-leaguer Lorie Peters will be back to try to help her team improve on its 5-2 mark last year.

Schuyler County will be another team looking to move up the ladder. After going 4-3 last year, Coach Steve Stock as reigning league MVP Kaitlin Stump back for her senior season.

Brookfield went 4-3 in the TRC but will have to replace its top two performers Jill Fletcher and Brooke Harrington, who graduated.

SCR-I will look to improve on its 2-5 record last season while trying to hold off North Shelby (1-6) and Milan (0-7). The later will return first team all conference selection Carly Bohle as former SCR-I coach Andrea Dabney will look to push the Wildcats up the standings.
