Tigers Run Wild Over Milan in 68-6 Conference Conquest

As the Scotland County defense lined up on the second play of Friday nights home game versus Milan, one of the defenders shouted They Get Nothing! That cheer was repeated on the ensuing play by another SCR-I defender and by numerous others throughout the evening and proved prophetic as the Tigers demolished the Wildcats 68-6. Milan took the opening kickoff but went no where as the Tigers defense did just that and gave them nothing. A short kick into a driving wind gave SCR-I excellent field position. Scotland County ate up the short field on just three runs by Kyle Shelley and Cody Taft, before the latter scored on a nine-yard TD run with 8:50 left in the first period. Tyler Eggers made the PAT kick to make the score 7-0. Just seconds later, the Tigers were on the scoreboard again courtesy of a turnover. Sabe Sears delivered a bone-crushing hit on the kickoff resulting in a Milan fumble that was recovered at the nine-yard line. Sears was rewarded on the next play as the quarterback ran in the touchdown with 8:43 on the clock. Eggers made the kick to put the Tigers ahead 14-0. The junior was in the middle of the next series as well as he picked off a Milan pass and returned it to the 14-yard line. He then connected with Harley Stone on a 14-yard touchdown pass on the very next play. The PAT kick was no good leaving the score at 20-0 less than five minutes into the game. Milan continued to get nothing on offense, going three and out with a punt. This series took SCR-I exactly two plays to strike paydirt as Taft broke a 33-yard run with 4:39 remaining in the first period. Sabe Sears ran in the two point conversion to make it 28-0. Milan moved the chains once on the next possession but was forced to punt to start the second period. The Tigers took their time on the next scoring drive, burning up all of three minutes before Shelley ran the ball in from two yards out. He set up the score with a 32-yard run. The PAT kick was no good leaving the score at 34-0 with 8:52 left in the first half. Milan again went three and out on offense, and the Tigers again put points on the board. Sears connected with Stone on an 18-yard completion that featured a great catch by the sophomore receiver. Taft broke a 24-yard TD run with 5:20 on the clock to make it 40-0. The Tigers took the ball right back when Rod Sears came up with an interception. Shelley took advantage of the turnover as he broke a 42-yard TD run for SCR-I. The PAT made it 47-0 with 3:35 left in the first half. The two teams turned the ball over to the understudies in the second half, but that didnt slow down the Tigers. Brock Bondurant took over at quarterback for the Tigers. On his second snap of the second half the sophomore broke a 67-yard touchdown run. Eggers booted another PAT to make it 54-0 with 10:20 left in the third period as the clock was running nonstop in the final 24 minutes under the Missouri mercy rule. Milan finally got on the board midway through the third period when Christopher Stagg ran the ball in from six yards out with 6:49 on the clock. The two-point conversion was stuffed to keep the score at 54-6. It didnt stay there long as Rodney Sears broke a 55-yard touchdown run on the next possession to add to the Tigers lead. The PAT kick by Eggers made it 61-6 with 3:27 left in the third period. Chris Doubet recovered a Milan fumble setting up the Tigers final tally of the contest. Bondurant scored on a seven yard run with 35.2 left in the third period. With the PAT kick, the Tigers led 68-06. The Tigers took a knee on the final series to run out the clock on the lopsided win. Shelley led the dominating defense performance, recording eight first half tackles. Taft made six stops and Justin Winn had five. Scotland County needed just 16 first downs on the night. Taft ran the ball nine times for 103 yards. Shelley had 102 yards on six attempts. The senior duo combined for five scores. Sears had 19 yards and a score on the ground and completed both of his pass attempts for 32 yards and a TD. Stone made both receptions. Bondurant had 81 yards and two TDs on three carries. Sears had one attempt for 55 yards and a TD. Zach Miller had 14 yards on two attempts and Ben Shannan ran the ball once for eight yards. Milan finished with seven first downs on offense (just two in the first half) and 160 yards of total offense. Brody Shrock accounted for the bulk of that with a 41-yard run late in the third period. Scotland County improves to 4-2 and 1-2 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
