Six Run Sixth Inning Spoils SCR-Iís Perfect Start to Softball Season

Just two innings stood between the Scotland County softball team and a perfect 3-0 start to the season. But a six run sixth inning by arch rivals Clark County spoiled the fun for the Lady Tigers on August 27th in Memphis.

Lightning in the area forced a delayed start to the contest and both squads took a little while to get rolling once the first pitch was thrown.

Freshman hurler Megan Creek retired the first eight batters she faced.

SCR-I (2-1) had base runners in each of the first three innings but couldnít come up with the key hit to push any runs across the plate.

Clark County struck first, scoring a lone run in the top of the third. Hanna Trump broke up Creekís perfect game with a two out single. A pair of fielding miscues by the Lady Tigers allowed Trump to score.

SCR-I erased the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Skyler Alderton led off the inning with a triple. She scored on a base hit by Cali Holt to make it 1-1.

The Lady Tigers went on top 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Monica Weidenbenner walked to start the rally. She scored on a triple by Creek. Kelly Lister delivered an RBI single to put her team up by two runs.

But the wheels came off for Scotland County in the top of the sixth inning. Clark County sent 10 batters to the plate and plated six runs to pull ahead 7-3.

The Lady Tigers threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning. Elizabeth Duzan walked and Creek reached on an error. But the tying run never came to the plate as the late inning heroics that helped SCR-I prevail in the seasonís first two games came up short on Thursday night.

Creek limited Clark County to just two hits outside of the key sixth inning rally. The Lady Indians put together four hits and a walk. A key SCR-I error opened the door for the inning, with just two of the six runs being earned. Overall Creek allowed seven runs, two earned, on six hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Lister went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Alderton was 1-3 with a triple and Creek was 1-4 with an RBI triple and run scored.
