Youthful Lady Tigers Will Feature New Look on Softball Diamond in 2009
ďItís a beautiful day for a ballgame... Letís play two!Ē Hall of Famer Ernie Banks was well known for making that statement encouraging double headers. Unfortunately for the Scotland County softball team, there will be no such opportunity in 2009 as limited numbers will force the team to cancel its junior varsity schedule, meaning just one game on the schedule each evening the girls take the field.
Despite having just 12 players on the roster, coach Kim Small has spent the summer working with the young team preparing a game plan for the season opener, Monday, August 24th when the team hosts Highland.
After graduating four starters and losing a few others who arenít with the team in 2009, the Lady Tigers will offer a whole new look on the diamond.
The teamís lone senior, Kelly Lister, is making the move behind the plate. Lister spent much of last year on the mound, but has some experience catching. Her bat, as well as her arm, helped Lister earn first team all-conference honors last year when she was SCR-Iís top hitter.
The team will look to freshman Megan Creek to be her battery mate on the mound. Despite her youth, Small pointed to Creekís extensive experience playing with summer league traveling teams, the team expects will carry over to her first varsity campaign.
Junior Skyler Alderton will move across the diamond. After starting at second base last year, she will replace Elizabeth Small at shortstop.
The rest of the infield will likely consist of sophomores. Courtney Jackson will take over for graduate Valerie Oldham at third base. Cali Holt and Kiley Frazier are battling for the starting second base job. Loren Smith will move in from the outfield, where she started several games as a freshman. She will be the teamís first baseman, replacing graduate Kaitlin Caldwell.
The team will feature a whole new outfield as well. The Lady Tigers graduated starter Christina Duzan and fellow starter Jessica Sites is not playing her senior season.
Juniors Monica Weidenbenner, Augusta Purvis and Grace Gerber, sophomore Elizabeth Duzan and freshman Katie Howard all will see time in the outfield.
Weidenbenner may also see some time at first base when Lister pitches as Smith moves behind the plate to catch.
