Youthful Lady Tigers Gaining Experience During Basketball Off-Season

With the graduation of six seniors from last year’s Lady Tigers basketball program Scotland County’s 2009-10 hoops squad will obviously have a new look. Just because the team lost four starters from last year’s 16-12 team doesn’t mean it will be a total rebuilding year at SCR-I.

After a busy start to the summer, the Lady Tigers team is starting to take shape. Coach Jaryt Hunziker thinks his team has made tremendous strides in June courtesy of a heavy workload.

“I don’t think many people will know what to expect from this team after we graduated all of those quality kids,” he said. “But the girls we have coming back work so well together, I think they may surprise some people.”

Hunziker praised the unselfishness of the early 09-10 version of the Lady Tigers and continually mentioned the team’s defensive intensity that has continued to gel during summer workouts.

The team traveled to Indiana in June and had the opportunity to spend some practice time on the court where the famous basketball movie Hoosiers, was filmed. The trip also included tickets to the Indiana state all-star game featuring a number of the nation’s highest ranked high school recruits, including girls headed to perennial collegiate power houses such as UConn and Purdue.

“They got to see the best of the best, and it was an eye opener to see how high the level of play can be elevated,” Hunziker said.

Without a single senior on the roster, and with just one starter returning from last year, the Lady Tigers have managed to maintain a record above .500 over the summer in some very difficult competition.

The Lady Tigers played three games in the Quincy University summer team camp before getting a chance to support a pair of former team mates in the McDonald’s/ Herald-Whig Classic all-star game.

The schedule picked up with nine games in Queen City via the Schuyler County team camp. SCR-I then brought home a first place finish in its division at the Rolla team camp.

Plans are already underway for next summer’s off-season program. Pending school board approval, Hunziker will be taking the Lady Tigers to Colorado in 2010 to participate in the Gold Crown Foundation Team Camp in Denver.

The camp includes teams from over 10 different states. The girls will be conducting fundraisers throughout the year to help with the cost of the trip.
