Lady Tigers Upset Top Seeded Putnam County

Defense wins championships, and it was definitely on that side of the ball where Scotland County took a huge step toward a district title. The Lady Tigers limited Putnam County to just 36 points en route to eliminating the #1 seed in the Class 2 District 14 semifinals.

SCR-I took an early lead behind the post play of Kaitlin Caldwell. The senior poured in eight first period points. Fellow senior Melissa Cotton drilled a three pointer to put SCR-I ahead 11-9 at the end of one period of play.

Valerie Oldham took over the scoring load in the second period. She had six points as Scotland County held on to a slim 20-19 advantage at the intermission.

The defensive effort truly made its mark in the third period when Putnam County was held to just one field goal. Caldwell and Cotton combined for six points and Deidra Dochterman helped extend the SCR-I lead to 29-23 by knocking down a key three pointer.

The Midgets failed to go away. Jamie Mullenix hit three field goals in the final eight minutes to bring her team back. But Ashley Tague connected on a clutch field goal and Melissa Cotton drilled a pair of crucial free throws to help preserve the 38-36 win for Scotland County.

Caldwell finished with 15 points to lead Scotland County in scoring. Oldham added eight points and Cotton pitched in with seven points. Mullenix led Putnam County with 15 points. SCR-I held leading scorer Katie Steele to just two points and Hilary Mason to just six points.
