Third Upset Bid Falls Short as SCR-Iís Season Ends in District Championship

Scotland Countyís improbable march to a district title fell one game short as Marceline quickly erased any ideas of a third straight upset bid for the Lady Tigers.

Marceline used the home court advantage to jump out to a commanding lead in the first period as SCR-I appeared a bit nervous on the big stage of the district championship tilt in Marceline on March 7th.

Scotland County compounded a tough Marceline pressure defense by making a number of unforced mistakes in the games opening minutes allowing the home squad to jump ahead 8-2 with 6:17 left in the first period.

Ashley Tague connected on a jumper to slow the momentum on the next possession, but SCR-I lost Melissa Cotton for the rest of the first half when she picked up her second foul just two minutes into the contest.

Marceline turned the SCR-I turnovers into fastbreak opportunities for some easy scoring chances early on. The teamís center Jordan Ewigman then connected on back-to-back three pointers to push Marcelineís lead to 18-6 just midway through the first period.

Baskets by Kaitlin Caldwell and Kelsey Frazier stemmed the flow momentarily before Marceline closed the first period with a 24-10 lead.

Tague hit a pair of shots to start the second period and Oldham converted an offensive rebound to trim the deficit to 10 points. But Marceline continued to pick apart the SCR-I defense with excellent movement without the ball. Oldham connected on a short jumper before Marceline closed out the half with a 6-0 run to lead 34-18 at the break.

The home squad came out firing to start the third period. A 7-0 run by Marceline in the first minutes of the second half made the lead to 41-18.

A three pointer by Anna Duley followed by a basket by Deidra Dochterman stopped the run and forced a Marceline time out with 2:23 left in the third period. The home squad responded, pushing the advantage to 20 points with just eight minutes to play.

Caldwell put in seven points to start the fourth period but it was too late for SCR-I, which fell 57-38 loss.

Marceline advances to take on District 13 champions New Franklin. Katie Gladback led Marceline with 24 points. Ewigman finished with 13 points.

SCR-I finished the year with a 16-12 record. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Caldwell with 11 points.
