Tigers Hoops Season Ends in District Opener

Scotland County entered the first round of district play as the higher seed against conference rival North Shelby, but SCR-I went into the game as the underdog courtesy of an ankle injury to starter Kyle Shelley during practice earlier in the week.

Even without Shelley’s inside presence, Scotland County opened the contest in solid fashion. Jacob Howard had a pair of buckets in the paint and Shelley’s replacement, freshman Derrick Muntz added an early score to keep the Tigers within 12-7 at the end of the first period.

But as it had been all season long, the second period proved to be Scotland County’s Achilles heel. North Shelby exploded for 21 points in the quarter to blow the game open. Brandon Garnett had a pair of field goals and freshman Brock Bondurant connected on a three pointer but it wasn’t enough to keep North Shelby from taking the 33-19 advantage at the break.

Seniors Andrew Duley and Jacob Howard each connected on their final high school field goal in the third period. But it was Muntz who stole the show for SCR-I. The freshman connected on three field goals during the quarter. But North Shelby’s Michael Stoneburner had the answer for the Raiders. He helped North Shelby outscore SCR-I 18-14 in the third period to expand the lead to 52-33.

Bondurant hit another three pointer to start the fourth period and poured in seven points down the stretch to give SCR-I fans a look at the future. Fellow freshmen Andrew Mathes and Muntz also scored late for the Tigers but North Shelby cruised to the 62-47 win to end Scotland County’s season.

SCR-I (6-21) will bid farewell to Howard and Duley as the season concludes. Howard went out with 10 points and Duley with three points. Muntz had 12 points to lead SCR-I in scoring. Bondurant added 10 points as did Garnett.
