Midgets Manhandle SCR-I in 64-30 Courtwarming Conquest
A pair of early baskets had Scotland County tied with Putnam County 4-4 early in the first period on Friday night in Memphis. But that was as good as it got for SCR-I as the Midgets spoiled Courtwarming night for the Tigers with a 64-30 defeat.
Putnam went on a 6-0 run before Kyle Shelley scored in the paint with 1:38 on the clock in the opening frame. The Midgets went right back to work, and closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 17-6.
Scotland County struggled against the Midgets full-court pressure. Putnam County took advanatge of several SCR-I turnovers to open the second period with a 9-0 run.
Drew Miller scored on an offensive rebound with 5:38 left in the quarter but it was only a momentary interlude, as Putnam County poured in 10 straight points to lead 36-8 with 2:52 left in the half.
Andrew Duley and Brandon Garnett hit a pair of free throws to close out the second period but Putnam County still led 41-14 at the break.
The Midgets looked like anything but a team on a five-game losing streak.
Scotland County showed some life in the third period.
Shelley scored seven points in the quarter as Scotland County played with Putnam County over the eight minutes to win the period 14-13.
But with a 54-28 lead, Putnam County closed out the contest on a 10-2 run in the fourth period shortened by a running clock.
Daniel Mallette led Putnam County (6-6, 2-1 TRC) with 19 points. Nolan Wood had 12 points and Brody Heidenworth hit three three pointers for the Midgets who are now in second place in the league.
Howard finished with 10 points as the Tigers remained winless in conference play (0-3) and dropped to 5-15 overall.
