Big Lead Evaporates But Lady Tigers Hang On to Beat Unity

A big first-period lead disappeared for Scotland County but the Lady Tigers were able to recover in time to post a 44-33 victory over Unity of Mendon on January 2nd in the opening round of the 37th annual Highland Basketball Tournament.

SCR-I jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first period. Deidra Dochterman opened the scoring with a jumper. Valerie Oldham stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored the layup. The duo each added another bucket in the opening minutes as the Lady Tigers jumped on top 12-2.

But the Lady Mustangs came galloping back. Betsey Kittle’s three pointer to start the second period was the lone points for Scotland County over the next six minutes. SCR-I was hampered by foul trouble with Kelsey Frazier, Kaitlin Caldwell, Ashley Tague and Oldham all picking up two fouls early in the second period.

Unity pulled ahead 19-18 but sophomore Jamie Shaw scored just before the break to give SCR-I the 20-19 halftime lead.

The Lady Mustangs again rallied to take the lead midway through the third period. But baskets by Oldham and Caldwell put the Lady Tigers ahead 28-26 with eight minutes left to play.

Frazier scored on an offensive rebound to open the fourth period. Caldwell followed with a pair of free throws to give Scotland County some breathing room. Caldwell’s shot in the paint made it 35-28 with just under five minutes to play.

Unity battled back to within two points as SCR-I couldn’t find the range over the next four minutes.

Oldham and Dochterman both made two free throws with just over one minute on the clock to keep SCR-I ahead 38-33. Tague sealed the deal for SCR-I when she made a steal on defense and took it coast-to-coast for the score. Oldham and Melissa Cotton added free throws down the stretch to make the final score 44-33.

Oldham finished with 11 points to pace Scotland County (7-1). Caldwell added 10 points.
