Shooting Woes Washout Lady Tigers Trophy Hopes in 40-32 Loss to Indians

One would have to look far and wide for a Lady Tigers basketball player that wont be happy to bid farewell to the Highland high school gym, in particular the rims.

SCR-I struggled through its third straight poor shooting performance in the gymnasium allowing a trophy opportunity to get away on Friday night as Clark County slipped by SCR-I 40-32 in the third place contest.

Scotland County broke 40 points only once in the three games as the Lady Tigers struggled to knock down shots throughout the event.

Friday night was no different.

Clark County jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Kaitlin Caldwell made one of two free throws at the 4:40 mark to get Scotland County on the board. Clark Countys Britni Bertelli had seven of the first eight points for Clark County before she left the game with an ankle injury.

Betsey Kittle sparked the offense as she came off the bench and immediately knocked down a three pointer. Kelsey Frazier then scored in the paint to cut the deficit to 10-6.

SCR-I opened the second period with a flourish. A three point attempt by Melissa Cotton rattled in and out but Valerie Oldham grabbed the offensive rebound and scored. Caldwell scored on a drive to the hoop and Cotton converted on a fast break opportunity on the next possession to pull SCR-I with 14-12 and force a Clark County timeout with 5:50 left in the second quarter.

SCR-I went three of six at the free throw line the rest of the first half missing the opportunity to tie the game. Clark County led 18-17 at the break.

The Lady Indians came out firing to open the third period. An 8-0 run made it 26-17 with 4:31 left in the quarter.

But SCR-I battled back. Cotton drilled a pair of free throws before Deidra Dochterman drilled a three pointer. Cotton scored on the next possession making it 26-24 with 3:18 on the clock. Cotton converted on another drive to the hoop before Caldwell tied the game at 28-28 with a pair of free throws to close the third period.

SCR-I took its first lead of the contest when Cotton scored to open the fourth period.

But the Lady Tigers went scoreless over the next six minutes. Clark County still only led by four points after Dochterman made one of two free throws with 1:19 left to play.

The rims remained unkind to Scotland County as its last point came on a free throw by Cotton, allowing Clark County to capture the third place trophy with the 40-32 victory.

Scotland County dropped to 7-3 on the year. Cotton topped the scorebook with 11 points for SCR-I. Clark County (4-5) was led in scoring by Cady Flood with 11 points.
