Donald E. “Stub” Orton, 74, of Memphis, Missouri passed away Saturday evening, December 26, 2009 at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.

The son of Edson Leroy and Hallie McNeely Orton he was born on July 10, 1935 in Keokuk, Iowa.

He attended Oak Ridge and Scotland County Schools. He enlisted in the Army August 12, 1953 and served in the Korean Conflict.

He married Vada Tripp and to this union Sandy and Cynthia were born. He later married Doris Martin and to this union Ronda and Sherri were born. He married Barbara Shinn Fowler on July 8, 1989 and she brought to this marriage three sons, Ernie, Richard and James.

In his lifetime, Donald farmed with his parents, operated a dozer in Texas, dug water wells in Kansas, did custom dozer work and later was Street Superintendent for the City of Memphis until 1990 when he then returned to the job he loved most, custom dozing. His grandchildren referred to him as “Grandpa Dirt.” Donald was very proud of the three-acre lake that he and Barbara constructed on their farm South of Memphis. They spent many hours on their deck overlooking the lake and enjoying the wildlife. He enjoyed sitting on the porch observing the hummingbirds, geese, purple martins and the turkey and deer that were often seen on the bottom ground. He collected guns and John Wayne memorabilia. Hunting was also a favorite past time. In December 2005, due to failing health he entered the Scotland County Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter; Cynthia Rae in infancy, his son; Richard Fowler and two brothers; Freddie and Leroy Orton

Surviving relatives include his wife Barbara Orton of Memphis; three daughters; Ronda Kirchner and her husband Pat of Kahoka, MO, Sherri Pickerell and friend Kirk Watson of Memphis, MO and Sandy Elliott of Tampa FL; two sons, Ernie Fowler and his wife Brenda of Toledo, OR and James Fowler of Gabbs, NV; eleven grandchildren; Charity Frizzell and Brandi Elliott both of Tampa, FL, Jason Bradley of Lee’s Summit, MO, Kim Armstrong of Kahoka, MO, William Pickerell of Memphis, MO, Ernie, Daniel and Tommy and his wife Jessica Fowler all of Bremerton, WA, Tracy Fowler of Fernley, NV, Shannon Fowler of Fallon, NV and Michael Fowler of Gabbs, NV; six great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Scotland County Food Pantry and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Brother Leon Buford officiating. Interment followed in the Memphis Cemetery and Military Graveside Rites were provided by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post # 4958 in Memphis.

Pallbearers were Wayne Winn, Larry Riney, Glen Miller, Dennis Bradley, Johnny Erickson and Dorsey Swearingen. Honorary Pallbearers were Ralph Erickson and Gary Ludwick. Musicians were Rick and Ruth Addison.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
