WILLIAM HOBERT BUTCH BURNS
(5/30/1916-11/21/2009)



William Hobert Butch Burns, 93, formerly of Lancaster, MO, passed away at the Kirksville Manor Care Center in Kirksville, MO, on Saturday, November 21, 2009 where he had been a resident since August 1, 2008.

The son of Leslie Edwin and Ollie May (Casteel) Burns, he was born on May 30, 1916, north of Lancaster, MO.

He was a graduate of the Lancaster High School in Lancaster, MO with the class of 1935.

He was united in marriage on June 8, 1946 to Nary Margaret Clover and to this union two daughters were born, Kathleen and Marilyn.

Survivors include his two daughters, Kathleen Hooker and husband, Richard of Merriam, KS and Marilyn Kelly and husband, Myles of Kirksville, MO; three grandchildren, Steven Hooker and wife, Jennifer of Overland Park, KS, Kevin Hooker of Portland, OR and Scott Hooker of McPherson, KS; one great-grandson, James Hooker; one brother, Paul H. (Bud) Burns and wife, Martha of Memphis, MO; one sister, Beulah Payne and husband, Judd of LaMesa, CA; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Preceding Butch in death include his parents; his wife, Mary Margaret Burns on September 10, 1990; two brothers, Leslie Hubert Burns on September 10, 1988 and Gerald Hugh Burns in infancy and one sister, Berniece Hites on December 26, 1998.

Butch was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II from which he was honorably discharged. Butch was a member of the Scotland County VFW Post #4958 in Memphis, MO.

Butch owned and operated the Burns Caf in Lancaster, MO for a number of years. Then he and Mary farmed in Schuyler County raising Polled Hereford cattle and enjoying a life on the farm from which they retired in the spring of 1988.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO, with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Organist Maureen Watkins and soloist, Cole Tippett, provided the music. Special selections were be On The Wings of a Snow White Dove and Blessed Assurance. Pallbearers were Steven Hooker, Scott Hooker, Kevin Hooker, Leslie Burns, Mike Burns, and Vic Leis. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Welsch, Charlie Beeler, Gene Neeley, and Rex Kerby. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Relay For Life. Burial was in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, MO. The Scotland County VFW Post #4958 of Memphis, MO will conduct military rites. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster, MO.
