MARGARET WEGENER

Margaret Wegener, 96, of Bloomfield, Iowa died October 16, 2009 at the Bloomfield Care Center in Bloomfield, Iowa. She was born May 30, 1913 near Memphis, Missouri to Emery and Reeta N. Myers. She married Werner Wegener August 8, 1937 in Memphis, Missouri. He preceded her in death October 4, 1988.

After graduating from Memphis High School with a Normal Training Certificate, she proceeded to earn all her college credits by going to summer school, taking night and Saturday classes. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in August 1960. She did post graduate work at Drake University, Iowa State, University of Iowa, and the University of Missouri.

She began her 44-year career by teaching five years in the rural schools of Edinburgh and Elm Grove in Scotland County, Missouri. After her marriage in 1937, her husband accepted a job as superintendent in Greentop, Missouri. She taught five years at Trinity School in Adair County and later two years at the elementary school in Greentop.

In 1944 she and her husband moved to Moulton, Iowa where he was superintendent, and she taught in the elementary grades for 14 years. In 1958 they moved to Bloomfield, Iowa where he was assistant superintendent and she taught second grade in the Bloomfield School System for 18 years.

She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter in Moulton, Iowa, life member of the Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, and the United Methodist Church in Bloomfield. After retiring, she was a member of the Davis County Retired Teachers Association, Iowa State Retired Teachers Association, and the Chautauqua Club of Bloomfield.

She is survived by a niece, Karen (Jim) Bowles of Keokuk, Iowa; a great-nephew, Brian (Meriann) Bowles of Rochester, Minnesota; a great-great-niece, Kaylee Bowles of Rochester, Minnesota; and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Marynel Boyer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, Iowa with Pastor Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial was in the Memphis Cemetery in Memphis, Missouri.
