GEORGE ELMORE SHIBLEY
(2/3/1930 - 4/29/2009)
George E. Shibley, 79, of Cabot, AR, formerly of Gorin, MO, and Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Cabot Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born the son of John E. and Lorena F. (Melany) Shibley on February 3, 1930 in Gorin.
George graduated from the Gorin High School in 1949. George joined the United States Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War with the Army Engineers attached to the United States Air Force.
He was employed by MidWest Carbide in Keokuk for 37 years. Upon retirement, George and his wife, Margaret moved to Arkansas, first to Horseshoe Bend and finally to Cabot. George was a member of the 16th Section United Methodist Church in Austin, AR, lifetime member of the VFW of Hamilton, IL, member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, American Legion, Kiwanis Club, and the Honorary Police of Horseshoe Bend, AR.
Until his illness, he was an avid bowler, golfer, square dancer, and a fun loving person.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Jo Bannister; and four nephews, Sloan, Tim, Bryan and Jon Hoskinson.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Maggie) Shibley of the home; daughters Teresa and husband Steve Berge of Shoreview, MN, and Jann and husband Paul Lowry of Lakeland, FL; a sister, Sue (Paul) Hoskinson and brother, John P. Shibley; grandchildren, Joe (Joanna), Angela (Dustin Ross) Lowry; Andrew (Jenny Kleppe), Eric, and Kelly Berge; great grandsons, Kyler and Ethan Lowry, Logan Ross; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, loyal family and friends.
Funeral services were held May 3, at the Gorin Christian Church with Pastor Jim Campbell and Paul Lowry officiating. Debbi Benish and Marsha Davis performed 10,000 Angels and Peace in the Valley. Dale Musgrove, Duane Arnold, Vince Rockhold, Dean Davis, Mitchell Pence, and Brent Rockhold served as pallbearers. Military rites were performed by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 of Memphis. Burial was in the Gorin Cemetery.
