HENRY (HANK) JR. REED
(7/6/1924-12/16/2008)



Henry (Hank) Jr. Reed was born July 6, 1924 in Scotland County, MO, to Henry and Opal Reed.

He passed away December 16, 2008 in Summerfield, FL.

Mr. Reed served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions during his 25 year tenure with the Lindbergh School District.

During World War II Hank served in the medical corps branch of the United States Army. For two years he was stationed in England, Northern France and Liege, Belgium. He was awarded a battle star for his contributions during the Battle of the Bulge and was also the recipient of various other medals. Hank obtained the rank of Technical Sgt. 4 and was slated for OCS when the war ended.

After his discharge from the military Hank married Beverly Stogsdill in 1947.

He was a graduate of Kirksville State Teachers College (now Truman State University). After college his first assignment in education was that of coach and principal in Cairo, MO. From there he went to Clarksville, MO and had a very successful run as head basketball coach for several years. Due to this success Leroy Amen offered him a position with Lindbergh High School in south St. Louis County. He served the Lindbergh District from 1957 until 1982. He coached basketball and baseball for six years. He left coaching to accept the position of Athletic Director serving in the capacity from 1964-1968. Mr. Reed then assumed the duties of 12th Grade Principal. He ended his long career in education as Assistant Principal of Sperring Middle School retiring in 1982.

Hank is survived by his wife of 61 years, Beverly Reed (nee Stogsdill); two sons, Randy Reed of Wildwood, MO (wife Debbie (nee Trefney) and Rick Reed of Columbia, MO (wife Mary (nee Moyle). He has four grandchildren, Rob Reed of Eureka, MO, Beth Moore of Wildwood, MO (husband Steve Moore), Ellyn Reed and Molly Reed, both of Columbia, MO. He has one great-grandchild, Alexa Moore. One sister, Arlene Fugate of Houston, TX (husband Rev. Charles Fugate) survives him.

Hank was a 50 year plus member of the Masons and an avid golfer playing every day that the temperature was above 40 degrees. He will be remembered by the Waterloo Country Club where he scored a hole in one in 2001.

Memorial services will be held May 8, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery. The family has asked that anyone who wishes to honor Hankís memory please donate to Hospice, Alzheimerís Research, or a charity of your choice.
