Scotland County Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week October 4-11

October 4-11 is National 4-H Week, and Scotland County is celebrating with a series of activities during the week. They will toss out 4-H footballs and frisbees during half time at the October 2 football game. Either Sunday, October 4 or October 11, each club will celebrate 4-H Sunday. On Monday each club will do a window display in Memphis and displays will be put at the library and at the grade school. Tuesday they will wear 4-H t-shirts to School. Wednesday clubs will furnish cookies to some of the businesses in Memphis who have supported 4-H. Thursday 4-H will furnish handouts to youth at the grade school and on Saturday 4-H members will put flyers in sacks and carry out groceries at Js.

The fundamental 4-H ideal of practical, learn by doing experiences encourage youth to experiment, innovate and think independently. 4-H members can ride bicycles, learn about being a veterinarian, take award winning photographs and learn more about the subjects they are interested in. Many 4-H members are very active in community service projects. The 4-H Motto is To make the best better. Members work through the motto by competing with themselves and others to learn more about their project and to make a better product.

Members showcase their work by exhibiting at fairs, achievement days, and festivals. The guidelines for exhibiting at these events are: exhibits should be the members own work; the exhibits should be made or completed in the current program year; exhibits should demonstrate the knowledge and skills gained by the 4-H member for the specific project in which they are enrolled. Participating in county and state events is limited to members who are in good standing. Being a member in good standing includes meeting deadlines, attending a majority of project meetings and club meetings prior to the event and meeting any other requirements established by club, county and/or state.

4-H members are expected to set and complete goals each year. At a minimum a 4-H member should: attend a majority of club meetings; enroll in at least one project and complete it; demonstrate a skill learned or knowledge gained by making a handmade item, exhibiting a project or animal at a show or fair, or presenting speech, report or demonstration in a group setting such as a club meeting or achievement event.

4-H is open to young people ages 5 to 18. The Clover Kids program is for kids ages 5 to 7. Youth ages 8 to 18 belong to regular 4-H programs. 4-H is a community of six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. 4-H is young people preparing to be the leaders of today and tomorrow. 4-H members attend camps, display their work at fairs, travel the world, host youth from other countries, attend meetings, club and county parties and much more. By belonging to 4-H members will prepare themselves for the future while making new friends and memories.
