Air Forces Hot Brass Group to Perform in Memphis

The sound of United States Air Force planes and jets have been music to the ears of many soldiers and civilians throughout the history of the service. But the Air Force also features a truly melodious unit whose tunes support the Air Force mission through the presentation of world-class musical products and services. The USAF Band of Mid-America helps promote and support troop morale, recruit, maintain community relations, and to preserve national heritage.

One of the units of the nationally acclaimed musical troupe will be performing at Memphis Theatre on Wednesday, October 7th as part of the groups Missouri Tour in October. The free concert is being sponsored by the Memphis Community Players.

The Band of Mid-America is the principal musical ambassador of Headquarters Air Mobility Command, dating back to 1942. The performers serve the nation at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

Hot Brass, a division of the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America will open the month of October at the National World War I Memorial in Kansas City. Stops in Lexington, Independence and Blue Springs will follow prior to the scheduled concert in Memphis.

Hot Brass offers a unique concert featuring a variety of lyrical and instrumental styles ranging from funk, jazz, blues, soul to zydeco, swing and country, as well as the latest pop hits.

Hot Brass defies conventional definition by thriving on diversity and creating a musical gumbo of genres to exploit each musicians musical background. This ten-piece group utilizes vocals, drums and guitar to entice audiences to move their feet while also paying tribute to our brass roots: front-line tuba functioning in lieu of electric bass, a beefed-up horn section, and heavy emphasis on brass. However, when the performing environment demands different styles or mobility, Hot Brass easily breaks down into a small pop combo and a brass quintet.

Hot Brass consists of: Noncommissioned Officer in Charge - Technical Sergeant Jerry Kelley; Trumpets -Master Sergeant Steve Collins and Technical Sergeant Eugene King; French Horn -Staff Sergeant Clay Toms; Trombone - Technical Sergeant Steven Frioux; Tuba - Staff Sergeant Matthew Kuebler; Guitar - Technical Sergeant Jerry Kelley; Percussion - Staff Sergeant Christi McGowan; Vocalists - Staff Sergeant James Gilley and Technical Sergeant Rebecca Collins .

In 2008, Hot Brass deployed to the Area of Responsibility (AOR) in Southwest Asia, the Middle East and North Africa in support of operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, bringing a taste of home to the hard-working men and women of the US military and coalition forces. Secondly, they carried a message of good will to people of all ages throughout the AOR.

Because of the versatility and portability of this ensemble, their perfor-mances are in high demand. Whether supporting public affairs initiatives, recruiting, or special military engage-ments, Hot Brass represents the pride and professionalism found every day throughout the United States Air Force.
