Munzlinger to Protect Farmers from Tax Increase
Representative Brian Munzlinger (R Ė Williamstown) will file legislation in the upcoming legislative session to overturn a tax increase on crop farmers that was passed earlier this week. Under a decision from the Missouri State Tax Commission, cropland will see a tax increase between 28-29% unless the General Assembly passes Munzlingerís bill in the first 60 days of the upcoming legislative session.
ďThis is the wrong time to be raising taxes on any Missourians,Ē proclaimed Munzlinger. ďPeople are struggling in this economy and some farmers have had a tough time due to the wet weather over the past few months. A tax increase on top of this economic crisis would be devastating to Missouri families.Ē
Munzlingerís frustration stems from the commissionís increase to the value of farmland that will be used to assess property tax. While considering the tax increase just two weeks ago, the commission only had a handful of people give public testimony but unanimously passed the provision with little debate or discussion on Tuesday.
ďWe see this sort of backroom dealing on so many levels of government these days, it is just ridiculous,Ē said Munzlinger. ďIíve come to expect this from Washington, but to have this sort of thing take place right here in Missouri is unbelievable. Thankfully, the voters have put conservatives in control of the legislature, and we have the ability to undo this irresponsible tax increase.Ē
Munzlinger will file his concurrent resolution immediately and is already gaining support from constituents, fellow legislators, and farm organizations. Several legislators as well as organizations like the Missouri Farm Bureau and the Missouri Corn Growers have already expressed their opposition during the tax commissionís initial consideration of the proposal.
ďFarmers in Missouri need to stick together in order to get through these tough times,Ē stated Munzlinger. ďI have already spoken with several legislators, farming organizations, and citizens who have expressed concern over this tax increase. This much support should help in getting this resolution passed within the next two months.Ē
Munzlinger currently serves as state representative for the 1st district in northeast Missouri. He represents the counties of Clark, Scotland, Knox, Lewis, and Schuyler and part of Marion and Adair. Munzlinger is also a Republican candidate for State Senate in Missouriís 18th district.
