Chamber to Kickoff Christmas Season With Lighting of the Square Event

The day after Thanksgiving is filled with plenty more than just turkey leftovers. Traditionally one of the largest Christmas shopping days of the year, “Black Friday” as it is called will be capped off locally with a special ceremony on the Memphis square Friday evening.

The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Christmas Lighting of the square at 5:00 p.m. The merchants’ group will host a number of special events throughout the evening following the official kickoff for the city’s holiday lighting and decorations.

Santa Claus is expected to make a stop at the ceremony, which often includes Christmas caroling and other festive celebrations that go hand-in-hand with special holiday hours for many local businesses.

The Scotland County Antique Fair Association will do its best to feed the crowd. The group is hosting a soup supper fundraiser that evening at the Antique Fair building on the west side of the square.

The Chamber will reward several lucky participants at this year’s event. A number of gift certificates will be given away. A total of $250 in Memphis Bucks, redeemable at any Chamber member, will be drawn for. You must be present the night of the event to take home the prizes, which will include 10 different $10 gifts, five $20 gifts and one $50 prize.
