Santa’s Helpers Adopt-A-Child Program Kicking Off 2009 Season of Giving
The Scotland County Santa’s Helpers Adopt-A-Child Program is gearing up for the 2009 season. Participants will notice some changes during the 2009 Christmas Season also.
We hope to ensure there is a gift or two under the tree come Christmas morning for children living in Scotland County, whose families utilize this program.
There are similar programs to Santa’s Helpers, such as Toys for Tots, etc. and we are asking that everyone please be considerate and only utilize one of these services.
The purpose of this program is to help struggling families in our community. Please remember this program is not to replace what a family can do, it is to help with what they can’t do.
Santa’s Helpers is available to children ages newborn to 17 years of age. Special circumstances will be considered for those over 17 years old. Please contact Michele prior to signing up children over 17 years old by calling 660-216-6226 and leave your name, number and a brief message.
Families in need can sign up their child(ren) and participate in the “Adopt a Child” by picking up a sheet at the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, Pamida in Memphis or Memphis City Hall. Sheets must be completed and turned back into one of those locations by Tuesday, December 1st.
Once names are received they are placed on the “Adopt a Child” tree at Pamida in Memphis. Individuals can adopt one or more of these children and purchase items on their wish list.
Once you select a child from the tree, please remember to fill out the bottom portion of the card completely and place it in the container located under the tree. The rest of the card needs to be attached to your purchase. Gifts can be returned to Pamida in Memphis or dropped off during business hours at City Hall. Gifts are not to be wrapped.
We don’t want to take a chance that a family needs to add their child(ren) at the last minute because of a family emergency or that there are names left on the tree. Santa’s Helpers is here to lend a helping hand with your help and support. We don’t want any child to go without, therefore, monetary donations can be left at the Bank of Kirksville in Memphis and it will be deposited directly into the Santa’s Helpers account.
We try to make sure that each child has at least one of the items on their wish list and also clothing which can consist of a shirt, pants, socks, etc.
The “Adopt a Child” volunteers will finish any last minute shopping that is needed in the last few days prior to Christmas. The shopping is only made possible with the continued support of people like you. Rather you adopt a child from the tree or give a monetary donation your generosity in greatly appreciated.
As for the changes to the program the sign-up sheets must contain the parent’s name(s) and MUST have a good working phone number, before the child will be set up in the system.
The major change this year is that gifts will NOT be delivered to the homes. Parents are responsible for picking up the gifts. Gifts must be picked up Monday, December 21st at the Memphis Fire Department between the hours of 5:00-7:00 p.m.
If the parent (the one listed on the sign-up sheet) is unable to pick up the gifts, they can have another individual pick up the gifts, but the parents must be the one to notify Michele prior to December 21st as to who is picking up the gifts.
We appreciate everyone for their past support and hope we can continue to count on you again this year. Santa’s Helpers would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
