Scotland County Speedway to Reopen for 2010 Season

With race cars set to take the track for the first and only time in 2009 during next weekendís Pepsi Memphis Nationals the news is looking much brighter for the 2010 season at Scotland County Speedway.

The Scotland County Fair Board has reached an agreement with Wayne Messamaker of Moravia, IA, to serve as the track promoter in 2010. The parties indicated weekly Saturday night racing action will return next summer.

Fair board president Kevin Eggleston reported the process had been ongoing this summer after efforts to hire a promoter for the 2009 season were unsuccessful. The agreement for 2010 will allow Messamaker to rent the track and concessions stand for the weekly races. Eggleston indicated the fair board likely will continue to operate the beer sales at the races.

Messamaker, 55, while soon to be a first time promoter, is no stranger to racing.

ďI started going to the races at Knoxville when I was six years old,Ē he said. ďWhen I was 19 I got my first race car and have driven pretty much every kind of car since then.Ē

The race enthusiast no longer drives, but he stills owns a pair of modifieds that are driven by other racers. He has piloted sprint cars, modifieds, stock cars and hobby stocks. His two sons currently are racing in the later.

ďIíve been racing all of my life,Ē he said. ďIíve never been a promoter or really involved on the entertainment side of it but Iím looking forward to the new challenge. I own my trucking company, so Iím not going into this expecting to make my living as a race promoter. I just really want to do it.Ē

Plans are to introduce the new promoter during the two-day special race in Memphis on October 16th and 17th.

Messamaker said he plans to start visiting prospective sponsors in the following months as he works on the track rules for 2010.
