Community Development Block Grant Will Help Fund Six Bridge Replacements in Scotland County
Five narrow, iron/wood beam construction one lane bridges in Scotland County will be replaced next year through a joint county and state project.
The State of Missouri through the Community Development Block Grant program will fund $163,400 of the total project cost of $251,100. Scotland County will fund approximately $10,000 of the material costs while also providing an in-kind match valued at $77,300 in labor and equipment.
The funding will allow the county to construct a total of six new bridges, replacing the five structurally deficient structures as well as one low water crossing. The bridges all date back to the 1930s.
The project calls for the construction of six new structures with steel pilings, steel I-beams and six-inch concrete decks with guardrails. The new bridges will be a minimum of 20.5 feet wide and will vary in length from 30-feet to 50-feet. The new structures will be constructed at a 100-year flood level with life expectancies of 100 years, providing two-lane traffic capable of supporting legal weight ratings up to 23 tons for single units and 40 tons for all other vehicles.
The bridge projects are dispersed in all four corners of the county. Bridge #0900002 is in the northwest quarter of the county. It is located on County Road 716 just south of Route H.
Bridge #358 is one of two to be replaced in the southwest quarter of the county. It is located on County Road 358, which is south of Route D.
Bridge #657 is located on County Road 657, which is located south of Highway 136 and north of Route D.
The northwest part of the county will receive one new bridge courtesy of the CDBG program. Bridge #1320003 is located on County Road 909 just south of the Route CC intersection.
The two bridges in the southeast part of the county are located northeast of Gorin. Bridge #337007 is located on County Road 156 (Colt Lane) and Bridge #4010005 is located on See Road just southwest off the other structure on the south side of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Rail Road tracks that dissect the region.
The six structures in question directly impact more than 40 families with detours of between four and six miles one way when the bridges are closed. All five of the old bridges are posted with weight limits ranging from eight to 16 tons. All were rated in poor structural condition due to rotted, sagging timber, abutement deterioration and frequent overtopping.
