Senator to Speak at 63rd Annual Memorial Day Service

Missouri State Senator Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, will be the featured speaker at the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 Veterans of Foreign Wars 63rd Annual Memorial Day Services. The Memphis V.F.W. will host the special celebration beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the Scotland County courthouse lawn on Monday, May 25th.

Post Commander Donnie Middleton and program chairman James David Parker will welcome the guests prior to the traditional placing of the memorial wreath by Clark Mustoe and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Charles Harris.

Kris Lancaster will offer the invocation prior to the performance of the national anthem by the Memphis Community Players. The Schuyler County High School Band will provide additional patriotic musical selections.

First Judicial Circuit Judge Gary Dial will introduce the feature speaker of the day.

Shoemyer serves the 18th Senatorial District, which includes the counties of Adair, Audrain, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Putnam, Ralls, Schuyler, Scotland and Shelby.

He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in November 2000 representing the 9th Legislative District which includes parts of Monroe, Audrain, Boone, Chariton and all of Howard County. He served three terms before running for, and being elected to the Missouri Senate in 2006.

Senator Shoemyer lives on his family farm and has owned and operated the farm in Monroe County for over 20 years.

The Memorial Day Services will close with a rendition of Sleep Soldier Boy sang by Parker with piano accompaniment provided by Connie Courtney. Pam Glasgow will offer the benediction and the VFW members will present a 21-gun salute while TAPS is played by Melinda Briggs.

If whether prevents the outdoor service, the program will be presented at the VFW post home.
