Next-Generation Jobs Team to Launch Summer Employment Program Locally

The Northeast Missouri Workforce Investment Board (NEMO WIB) recently announced it will be providing a summer employment program that will prepare young Missourians in the Northeast Region for exciting careers in the high-tech, high-paying industries of the 21st century. The program, known as the Next-Generation Jobs Team is being launched statewide.

Next-Generation Jobs Team is a summer employment program that matches youth ages 16 to 24 with paid summer jobs and internships at cutting-edge employers throughout Northeast Missouri. As part of the program, NEMO WIB partner staff will work with the young people to identify career fields of interest and then place them with participating employers.

“This is a great opportunity to place qualified young people into jobs that they might never have found on their own. It might spark their interest to continue their training and education into making it their career.”

Nate Walker director of the Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission indicated his office will also be hosting informational and sign up meetings in Memphis in the near future.

Next-Generation Jobs Team participants will spend the summer gaining on-the-job training and work experience, along with ongoing guidance and support from professional career counselors from the Missouri Career Center located in Kirksville. Wages for the young workers are funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

In the statewide announcement, Governor Nixon lauded how the program not only helps young people gain vital experience, it helps employers develop a pool of talent to meet their needs for educated and qualified workers and to “build the workforce that will lead Missouri’s economy into the future.”

Young Missourians or businesses interested in participating in the Next-Generation Jobs Team can apply by way of the website www.summerjobs.mo.gov or call the Missouri Career Center-Kirksville at 660-665-5930 or toll free 1-800-499-0712. Interested youth must meet eligibility requirements. There is no fee to participate. The program will be available between May 1 and September 30, 2009.
