The SCR-I Board of Education met April 14th in the elementary school art room with six members present to open the meeting. Member Bill Cottrell was absent.

The board voted to fill a number of staff vacancies for the next school year and also learned of two new openings.

The board voted 6-0 to accept Nathan Pippert’s letter of resignation with regret. The high school math teacher is leaving the district to take an assistant principal position at another school district. Also the board was informed that FACS teacher Katie Houston rejected her contract and took a position in her hometown Bloomfield, Iowa.

The board went into executive session at 9:20 p.m. for purposes of hiring.

The board voted 6-0 to approve contracts for Greg Wilson, and Claire Overton as 9-12 English Teachers for the 2009-2010 school year.

The board voted 6-0 to rehire the following 12-month employees for the 2009-2010 school year: Jerri Mohr, Kate Walker, Linda Hervey, Terri Arnold, Carl Trueblood, Michella Hull, Mike Beeler, and the custodians Jim Woods, Linda Gray, Shelly Jackson and Eric Anders.

The board voted 6-0 to offer employment to Jenna Ketchum as the FACS teacher at the High School.

The board voted 6-0 to offer employment to Paul Kothe as an elementary teacher.

The board voted 6-0 to come out of closed session at 1:20 a.m. and go into open session and establish a building trades committee.

Board president Gary Miller appointed a building trades committee to establish a floor price for the sale of the current building trades house and the lot. The committee is Stacy Alexander - Chair, Bill Cottrell, and Paul Campbell.

Earlier in the evening, the board heard reports from members George Koontz, Campbell and Alexander regarding their attendance of the M.A.R.E. Conference.

They also reported on the board workshop where topics of discussion included summer school, weighted grades, finances, building trades, all weather track, school website, and building improvements. No action was taken.

Superintendent Dave Shalley reported on the recent district MSIP review. The State supervisor visited the district March 19th for the District’s Missouri School Improvement Plan (MSIP) review. The District’s performance qualified for a full waiver.

The board continues to take a wait-and-see approach on federal stimulus money that currently is bogged down in the state legislature.

For several months the board has been discussing repairing the leaking roof on the shop building. The Federal Stimulus Package includes repair and renovations of buildings. The stimulus package has not made it through the Missouri Legislature yet. It has been recommended not to begin any projects using federal dollars until the package is made available.

The funding is also being considered for repiars or upgrades to the front entranceway of the elementary school.

“After our board workshop we were unable to lock the front doors of the elementary building,” Shalley said. “They had been worked on that day by a locksmith. Just last week the lock was fixed.”

Currently only two of the four locks on the front doors are functional. The district had had Beards from Kirksville look at the doors and locks for repair and replacement costs.

“Replacing the entire front door set might be something we want to consider as a project for the stimulus package, a possible energy grant, or at district cost,” Shalley said.

The board also announced the creation of two advisory committees.

President Miller appointed a committee to look into grants available for an all-weather track. The committee is Bill Cottrell-Chair, Tom DeBerry, Kevin Gundy, and Matt McKee.

President Miller appointed the following board members to the salary committee: George Koontz-Chair, Matt McKee, and Dr. Tobler. These members will meet to discuss the future salary structure for district employees.

The next meeting of the board of education was moved to May 12th at 6:30 p.m. due to a scheduling conflict.
