Dr. Tobler Earns Missouri State Medical Association Presidents Award

A local physician was honored with a prestigious award at the Missouri State Medical Associations (MSMA) 151st annual convention in Kansas City on April 4th. MSMA President Jeffrey Thommasson, MD, presented the Presidents Award to a long time MSMA member and patient advocate, Dr. Randy Tobler.

Dr. Tobler was recognized for his past efforts with the MSMA advocating womens health issues, fighting for legislative-based tort reform, and promoting patient rights. He was honored by a colleague, Dr. Thommasson, who had previously served with Tobler on various MSMA councils regarding many of these efforts.

However the two men had lost touch over the past several years, during which time the MSMA president acknowledged Dr. Toblers continued efforts in public service via his advocacy efforts and various radio programs. He also applauded Toblers move from St. Louis to rural northeast Missouri in an effort to bring medical coverage to underserved areas.

I encouraged the convention attendees to continue to fight versus the widget-ization of medicine; patients are people, not widgets, and one size doesnt fit all in medicine, said Tobler. Too often we see government and insurers prescribing treatment based on recipes regardless of the patients specific needs. In this system, physicians are increasingly forced away from individualized care.

The MSMA consists of 43 local medical societies serving as the voice for more than 6,500 physicians promoting science and art of medicine, protection of the health of the public and betterment of the medical profession in Missouri.

Dr. Tobler is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in practice for 20 years. He was trained at Washington University School of Medicine, and has won the Rothman Resident Research Prize and twice was named Clinical Faculty Teacher of the Year. At the bedside, Dr. Tobler has been named one of the Best Doctors in America by his peers, and one of St. Louis Medical Marvels by St. Louis Magazine.

An award winning broadcaster, he received the Missouri Broadcasters Association Special News Program of the Year Award in recognition of his Presidential Debate, 2004 effort. Dr. Tobler created RTE, his communications and consulting company, in 2005. A veteran medical and wellness commentator, Randy currently hosts three medical radio projects.

Vital Signs and Healthy University bring eclectic and credible health information in a humorous and relaxed style to local audiences. His latest project is Virtual Checkup, a popular syndicated daily health brief covering a wide array of topics. A rabid talk radio and media junkie, he talks politics and culture on his weekly four-hour The Randy Tobler Show, a passionate plea to preserve Americas virtues, now in its sixth year.

Dr. T, as his patients often call him, has performed as an instrumentalist since age 13, including Broadway shows, headline acts, national tours and local repertory. A father of three and husband of 27 years, Dr. Tobler is grateful to his wife Heliene and children Sean, Shannon and Samantha for their love and support. He now practices in rural Northeast Missouri, and is busy offering comprehensive womens services to an underserved population, striving to provide big city access and quality that will serve as a model for other seasoned clinicians.
