Corn Growers to Host Farm Bill Forum

Farm policy is constantly evolving, and the current climate is no different. Producers insterested in learning more about the 2008 Farm Bill will have a special opportunity locally courtesy of a number of state and local organizations.

The Missouri Corn Growers Association, Northeast Missouri Corn Growers, Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute (FAPRI), National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) will host an informational meeting in Memphis on March 9th at the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 of the VFW.

The public is invited to attend the forum covering program specifics of the 2008 Farm Bill, including Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE), Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE), Payment limitations changes, record keeping and more.

“Our primary goal is to help build a solid knowledge base regarding new farm programs which will prepare you to weigh your options and make the necessary decisions before program sign up,” said Katie Jarboe of the Missouri Corn Growers Association

The event will begin with registration at 9:00 a.m. The agenda kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with Kenny McNamar, Missouri Corn Growers Association Board Member, and Dana Hauk, Northeast Missouri Corn Growers Chairwoman, welcoming the guests and presenting a Farm Bill overview.

Dr. Pat Westhoff, Food & Ag Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) Co-Director will present a market outlook and overview of Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) at 10 a.m. followed by reports on the Supplemental Revenue Assistance (SURE), payment limitations and record keeping requirements presented by the USDA – Farm Service Agency.

Lunch will be served at noon courtesy of the Missouri Corn Growers Association.

Following the meal, Dr. Patrick Guinan, State Climatologist will give a Missouri weather outlook.

Other afternoon presentations will include USDA Crop Estimates by Gene Danekas, Director, USDA-NASS Missouri Agricultural Statistics Service; and an ACRE Calculator Demonstration by Dr. Pat Westhoff, Food & Ag Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) Co-Director.

All of the presenters will be present for a discussion panel at 2:00 p.m. to answer questions from the guests. They will be joined by Gregory Oetting, Risk Management Agency and Charles Krueger, Missouri Corn Growers Association, Board Member.
