Rash of Burglaries Spreads From Iowa to Scotland County Businesses

Less than 24-hours after resolving a series of crimes in the city, the Memphis Police Department found itself with a new case to crack.

During the evening of February 16th at least three businesses in Memphis were burglarized. According to the MPD, the burglars entered the Farm Bureau office and Kay Eggleston Bookkeeping and Tax Service on Highway 15 and took an undisclosed amount of cash from each business. The burglars also gained entrance to Musser’s Animal Feed Store on Highway 136 but nothing was reported stolen.

The Scotland County Sheriff’s Department reported the Catfish Place near Arbela was burglarized sometime that evening between 7:40 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

These crimes match similar patterns associated with a series of burglaries at businesses across southern Iowa.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department reported more than a dozen businesses in Cantril, IA and Farmington, IA were burglarized on the evening of February 6th. All the merchants reported only cash was stolen from the stores.

Similar crimes have been reported in Lee, Davis and Appanoose counties in Iowa. The timeline created by Iowa investigators indicated the burglars apparently began in Donnellson, IA and worked their way west through Van Buren and Davis counties before hitting Appanoose County.

As was the case in the Scotland County burglaries. There was no sign of forced entry at any of these Iowa burglary sites.

The Van Buren County investigation includes videotape of two male suspects believed to be in their 20s. Both have dark hair and one wears long sideburns while the other has longer goatee facial hair.

Anyone that may have seen any suspicious activity at any of these sites on that Monday night is asked to contact the Memphis Police Department at 660-465-2612 or the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department at 660-465-2106.
