School Board Hires New High School Principal
After a lengthy search and interview process the Scotland County R-I Board of Education has filled the high school principal job.
In a special meeting on February 13th the board voted 7-0 in executive session to offer a one-year contract to Gene Hay with a salary of $65,000.
Hay brings more than 20 years experience to Memphis as an instructor, coach and administrator. Most recently he has been employed as an administrator in the Clinton County R-III School District where he served as a middle school principal and assistant high school principal for 13 years for the Plattsburg school.
The district interviewed five finalists for the job. A panel of staff members and community representatives interviewed the candidates on February 7th, offering hiring recommendations to the board.
In other business, the board discussed state budget projections. Superintendent Dave Shalley indicated that reports coming out of Jefferson City regarding state revenues and education funding are not very optimistic.
“Projected revenues are down, the funding of the formula is in question, and there are discussions about cuts in state aid,” he told the board. “We have been advised to proceed very cautiously in the upcoming fiscal year.”
The board also reviewed the proposped calendar for the 2009-10 school year. The NEMO NET schools have agreed on a school calendar for next year.
“Since we all use the ITV network, we need to follow the same calendar as closely as possible,” said Shalley. “A calendar was presented for each school to look at and review.”
The calendar will meet the mandated 174 days of attendance and 1044 hours required by law. The board voted 7-0 to accept the 2009-2010 NEMO NET calendar.
Shalley presented a report regarding roof problems in the high school shop area. He informed the board that the roof is leaking and is in need of repair. The board instructed Shalley to investigate possible solutions.
