Rural Fire Protection Memberships Are Due
As the year winds down, many a rural resident makes the trek to the courthouse to pay taxes, and then on to the bank or the insurance office to pay their fire dues.
Fire dues? Residents of Scotland County that live outside the city limits of Memphis can belong to the Scotland County Rural Fire Protection Corporation. As a non-taxing entity, the rural fire department’s sole source of income is from membership dues.
Those membership dues are payable annually by January 1st. The cost of a new membership is $50 and the annual renewal cost is $30. Dues may be paid at the State Farm Insurance office in Memphis or at any of the banks in town. They may also be mailed to PO Box 261, Memphis, MO 63555.
Currently the rural fire corporation consists of approximately 725 members with just under 850 paid memberships. The annual revenue from memberships pays for fuel and maintenance of the fire trucks and safety equipment for the 24-man volunteer fire department.
Memberships are required for all residences, or for property with outbuildings or other improvements. For more information on becoming a member or renewing a membership contact corporation secretary Stacie Dannenhauer at State Farm Insurance.
