Lady Tigers Outlast Louisiana 47-35 in Rumble on the River

Start and stop, start and stop, start and stop It is not good on vehicles and it wasnt great for Scotland Countys up tempo offense. But in the end the Lady Tigers prevailed 47-35 over Louisiana in a game that never really seemed to get rolling.

The two squads met in John Wood Community Colleges Rumble on the River in Quincy, IL, on December 20th and the name rang true for a very physical contest that often times resembled a wrestling match.

The two teams combined to commit 14 personal fouls in the games first 10 minutes. The large number of whistles slowed the tempo, which is definitely what Scotland Countys opponents want to do. Despite not being able to get into the transition game, the Lady Tigers still managed to jump out to an early lead, albeit a slim one. Ashley Tague went 1-2 on a pair of trips to the charity stripe and Kelsey Frazier converted an offensive rebound to put Scotland County ahead 4-2 with 3:20 left in the first period.

The Lady Tigers rebounded from the slow start to go on a 9-0 run fueled by transition scores from Melissa Cotton and Betsey Kittle. SCR-I left the door open for the Bulldogs. The team attempted to hold the ball for the final shot of the first period but a turnover let Louisiana trim the deficit to 12-6 at the opening buzzer.

The two teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes to start the second period before a Frazier free throw broke the drought with 5:16 left in the first half. Kaitlin Caldwell and Frazier hit field goals in the paint to push the lead to 17-8. But SCR-I struggled at the free throw line much of the first half. The team made just three of its next eight shots from the charity stripe to allow Louisiana to pull within 20-15 at the intermission. Scotland County made just seven of 21 free throws in the first half as the two teams combined for 22 first half fouls.

The third period proved to be all Scotland County. Tague opened the scoring with a bucket in the paint. After a Dochterman free throw, the senior guard knocked down a three pointer between a pair of field goals by Tague to push the lead to 30-20. The run continued as Caldwell converted a three-point play with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Valerie Oldham made a steal and put in the lay up to put SCR-I ahead 35-20 with just eight minutes left to play.

The Bulldogs wouldnt go down without a fight. Louisiana opened the fourth period with an 8-0 run before Caldwell sank a couple free throws to make it 37-28 with 4:20 left to play. That started a trend, as SCR-I was a perfect 8-8 at the charity stripe down the stretch to help preserve the 47-35 victory.

Scotland County improved to 5-1 on the year behind 13 points from Kaitlin Caldwell. Ashley Tague contributed 12 points while Dochterman finished with eight and Frazier had seven.
