Big Reds Rain Three Pointers on Tigers in Home Opener
Freezing rain was in the forecast but a storm of another sort struck early inside Scotland County gymnasium as Centerville rained down three pointers on the Tigers to defeat Scotland County 68-42 in its home opener December 15th.
The Tigers handled the challenge early courtesy of a strong interior game. Kyle Shelley and Jacob Howard each had a pair of buckets in the first period. But Centerville’s Brendyn Hawkins had the answer as he connected on four three pointers in the opening frame to put the Big Reds ahead 12-10.
Harley Stone put up six points in the second period but the Tigers did not have an answer for the perimeter attack.
Hawkins’ teammates got into the act in the second period as Conner Kirkpatrick and Jordon McCoy connected from behind the arc. Hawkins’ fifth trey of the night helped Centerville complete a 22-13 run to lead 34-23 at the intermission.
The visiting squad put the contest out of reach in the third period. The Tigers mustered just six points on field goals by Stone, Brandon Garnett and Shelley. The Big Reds cooled off from three-point land, but still used a 17-6 run to build a 22-point bulge.
The two teams traded buckets in the final period as Centerville went on to the 68-42 victory.
SCR-I fell to 2-4 on the season. Shelley finished with 15 points to pace the Tigers. Stone pitched in with 12 and Howard added 11 points. Hawkins finished with a game-high 22 points for the Big Reds. Kirkpatrick added 16 points.
