Lady Rams Erase Double-Digit Deficit to Upset SCR-I 57-56

Scotland County saw the perfect start to its 2008-09 season slip away in the final seconds as Schuyler County completed a rally from a double-digit four quarter deficit to upset the Lady Tigers 57-56.

SCR-I got off to a slow start on offense as Schuyler County packed in the zone defense to hamper the Lady Tigers post game. A pair of scores by Ashley Tague made it 9-4 midway through the first period.

Deidra Dochterman knocked down a three pointer to open the second period and extend the lead to 12-6. Kaitlin Caldwell scored on an offensive rebound and Tague added a fastbreak layup to push the advantage to double digits at 18-8 and force a Schuyler County time out.

The Rams responded and trimmed the deficit to four before Dochterman knocked down another three pointer to make the score 22-15.

Schuyler County pulled within 22-21 to start the third period. But Tague and Melissa Cotton nailed back-to-back treys to make it 28-21 with 6:22 on the clock, forcing another Rams timeout.

The margin stayed at seven as the squads traded buckets most of the third period.

SCR-I looked posed to blow the game open when Cotton connected on another three pointer. Caldwell made a steal and went coast-to-coast for the lay in making it 41-29.

Still the Rams wouldnít go away. SCR-I led 43-33 with 7:01 left to play after Dochterman made one of two free throws. She made four of six from the charity stripe over the next three minutes but the Rams took advantage of several costly SCR-I turnovers to trim the lead to 46-40 with 3:51 left to play.

Dochterman and Tague added free throws and Tague converted on a driving score in the paint with 1:09 left to keep SCR-I on top 53-46.

After the Rams scored, SCR-I came right back with Caldwell getting an easy bucket off the press breaker to make it 55-48.

Schuyler County converted a pair of free throws and after SCR-I missed the front end of the 1-1, Kaitlin Stump drilled a three pointer to make it 55-53 with 33 ticks left on the clock.

Tague made one of two free throws, but SCR-I came up with a steal on the rebound. However the lay up attempt rattled in and out and SCR-I was called for a foul on the rebound. The Lady Rams converted both free throws with 23.6 seconds to play.

SCR-I again broke the press but missed the lay in allowing Schuyler County to rebound and pull ahead 57-56 with 9.9 seconds to play on a basket by Kourtney Nelson.

Scotland Countyís last-second shot attempt was off the mark, allowing Schuyler County (1-2) to escape with the victory.

Stephanie March had a game-high 21 points for Schuyler County. Stump finished with 17.

SCR-I (4-1) was led in scoring by Tague with 16 points. Caldwell added 13 points and Dochterman pitched in with 12 points. Cotton gave the team four scorers in double digits with 11 points on the night.
