Lady Tigers Dominate Glass In Season Opener

Generally a successful corporation has only one chief, but in Tuesday nights dominating performance to open the Novinger Tournament, the Scotland County Lady Tigers had several players serving as chairman of the board(s). The #1 seed dominated the rebounding contest, particularly on the offensive end to defeat Grundy County 78-18.

SCR-I jumped ahead early courtesy of, what first-year Coach Jaryt Hunziker is expecting will become the teams trademark, full court pressure defense. Ashley Tague converted on a pair of Panthers turnovers to open the scoring. Kaitlin Caldwell and Valerie Oldham then hit shots in the paint to put SCR-I ahead 8-2. Five of the last six baskets by Scotland County came on the offensive glass as Caldwell scored eight points to close out the opening period with the Lady Tigers on top 20-3.

Oldham and Caldwell continued the dominance of the interior game in the second period. The duo combined to score 12 points as SCR-I added to its big lead. Betsey Kittle converted a three-point play and Deidra Dochterman added a couple scores to push the advantage to 43-8 at halftime.

Hunziker used his eight-player rotation to perfection, wearing down the Panthers while preserving his tournament time for his junior varsity squad. Jayvee starters Skyler Alderton, Cali Holt and Jamie Shaw traveled with the team but did not expect to see court time in an effort to preserve their playing time. Under MSHSAA rules, players are limited to three regular season tournaments, and with three varsity and two JV tourneys this year, the coach will have to be creative in his player use at both levels.

Scotland Countys domination on the glass continued in the third period. The third member of the Lady Tigers post rotation, Kelsey Frazier, went to work, scoring eight points. Melissa Cotton connected on a three pointer and followed that up with a bucket in the paint to make the score 68-13 to end the third period.

Scotland County went on to the 78-18 win behind a game-high 20 points from Caldwell. Tague and Frazier each finished with 14 points while Oldham added 12.
