Track Champs Crowned After Season Finale Rained Out at SCS

Former Tiger Hoping to Pilot SCR-I Hoops Program to New Heights Former Scotland County standout Lance Campbell has returned to his alma mater. The first year coach at SCR-I has his work cut out for him in his debut season as he faces the unenviable task of replacing a former league MVP in Cody Musgrove.

In all, SCR-I graduated five seniors from last years squad that went 8-17. Musgrove leaves the biggest shoes to fill, literally and figuratively. SCR-I will have to replace its starting big man who averaged 18.3 points and 10.8 rebounds last season.

Campbell will also have to fill the starting two-guard spot that was handled by Travis Trueblood, the teams second leading scorer last year, and top perimeter threat.

The team will return three starters, in senior Andrew Duley and juniors Kyle Shelley and Brandon Garnett.

Duley handled the point guard duties last year, but could see some time at the shooting guard as well, as he is the squads leading returning three-point shooter.

Garnett will look to pick up some of the scoring slack created by Musgroves departure. The small forward gives the team a scoring threat both on the perimeter and off the dribble.

Shelley will take over as the man in the middle. He was the teams second leading rebounder. He and senior Jacob Howard will see most of the time in the paint. Howard was the teams sixth man a season ago and had several big scoring games off the bench for the Tigers. SCR-I will need his left-handed touch as they look to him and Shelley to produce points in the paint.

Sophomores Kasey Dial and Dakota Wells provide the lone returning experience for the Tigers. Both players saw limited action at the varsity level last year. Fellow sophomore Bryce Smith was injured in practice, and his status is undetermined for the season as he recovers from elbow and shoulder problems.

After struggling for enough numbers to even put a junior varsity squad on the floor in 2007-08, Campbell has seen the program rebound with the incoming freshman class being augmented by several new faces to the program.

Sophomores Logan Brassfield, Rodney Sears and Sabe Sears have joined the squad this year and senior Caleb Kittle has returned to basketball after not playing the past two seasons.

Freshman Drew Miller heads the talented incoming class. He could see some time at the point guard spot for the Tigers. Harley Stone, Andrew Mathes and Derrick Muntz provide Campbell with options in the post and Brock Bondurant will give the team other looks at the perimeter spots.

Schuyler County looks like the team to beat in the Tri-Rivers Conference, although Clark County will be in no hurry to pass the torch. The Rams (6-1 last year) return league MVP Jacob Winkler. Clark County (7-0 last year) will have to replace first team all-conference player Colt Sommers, but will still have the services of Ethan Allen and Michael Brennan once the 2008 football season ends for the Indians this weekend in the state championship game.

Last years third place team, Knox County will return Richard Dent in the paint but will have to offset the graduation of high scoring guards Daniel McMahon and Corey Shultz.

Putnam County went 4-3 last year but graduated all-league players Jesse Hinkle and Torey Weston.

Brookfield will look to move up in the standings with a strong returning cast led by Corey Bailey and Ryan Falconer while Milan will be leaning on Logan Hill and North Shelby will look to Michael Stoneburner to help them try to move up in the standings after finishing in the bottom half of the league in 2007-08.
