Canton Captures 3-2 Win Over Lady Tigers in Pitchers’ Dual

The rollercoaster ride that was Thursday evening’s softball game in Canton ended up one run short for Scotland County fans as SCR-I fell to the Lady Tigers 3-2 in the final non-conference game of the year.

Kelly Lister and Kristyn Caldwell locked horns in a pitching dual over the game’s first three innings.

Scotland County threatened in the top of the first inning after Caldwell walked Lister and Deidra Dochterman. But SCR-I was unable to push a run across.

On the other side, Canton did not threaten until the third frame. Lister retired the side in order in the opening two frames before Canton’s first base runner in the third. That threat was erased when Dochterman gunned down a runner at third base.

Canton finally went on top in the bottom of the fourth. An error and a walk and a passed ball put runners in scoring position for Caldwell, who put down the bunt to push the first run across the plate. Canton went ahead 2-0 on the second RBI ground out of the inning.

Scotland County answered in the top of the fifth. Kailtin Caldwell led off with a base on balls. Valerie Oldham reached on an error before Christina Duzan advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Jessica Sites reached on a fielder’s choice that loaded the bases. Elizabeth Small reached on an error that allowed the first run to score. Lister followed with an RBI single that tied the score at 2-2 but Sites was gunned down at the plate to prevent Scotland County from taking the lead.

That play loomed big, as Canton pulled ahead in the bottom of the frame with a single run courtesy of an SCR-I fielding error.

That proved to be the winning run as SCR-I stranded a pair of runners in both tthe sixth and seventh inning.

Loren Smith and Oldham had base knocks in the sixth inning but were left on base.

The Lady Tigers final at bat saw a rally fall short as well. With one out Small walked and moved to second on a single by Lister. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. But Canton played the infield in and prevented a run from scoring on a ground out before the final out was recorded on a pop fly to preserve the 3-2 win for the home squad.

The loss dropped SCR-I to 5-13 on the season.

Lister allowed three unearned runs on just two hits. She gave up one walk and hit a batter while striking out two.

Caldwell limited SCR-I to four hits. Both SCR-I runs were unearned. She walked four and struck out seven.

Lister went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Oldham was 1-3 with a run scored and Smith also went 1-3.
