SCR-I Rally Falls Short In Tournament Trophy Game

The bats were loud for the Scotland County softball squad but ultimately it was the gloves that cost the Lady Tigers as fielding mistakes came back to haunt the team in a pair of losses at the Schuyler County Tournament on Saturday.

SCR-I opened the event with an 11-1 victory over Novinger.

Skyler Alderton led off the first inning with a base hit and came around to score on a double by Deidra Dochterman to make the score 1-0.

Novinger tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the second inning when a pair of errors opened the door for an unearned run.

SCR-I put the game away in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Tigers loaded the bases when Kaitlin Caldwell, Valerie Oldham and Christina Duzan all reached on errors. Alderton walked to force in the go ahead run. After Elizabeth Duzan reached on a fielderís choice, Kelly Lister walked to make it 3-1. Dochterman delivered a base hit that plated three more runs to make it 6-1.

Scotland County added four more runs in the fourth inning. Alderton led off with a base hit before Lister delivered her fourth home run of the season to make it 8-1. Dochterman and Jessica Sites added base hits in the inning.

The Lady Tigers finished off the game in the bottom of the fifth when Lister delivered an RBI single to plate the 11th run for the 10-run rule to call the contest at 11-1.

Lister picked up the win on the mound. She allowed one hit and walked three while striking out five. She went 2-3 at the plate. Alderton was 2-3 with three runs scored and Dochterman went 3-3 with four RBIs.

Game two saw SCR-I fall behind Knox County 4-0 before rallying for a pair of runs late to make the game close.

The Lady Eagles went on top 1-0 in the second inning courtesy of a triple by Brittany Miller. Knox County went ahead 4-0 after a rough inning in the field for SCR-I. Dochterman gunned down a runner trying to steal second. And Lister struck out the second batter of the inning. But with two outs, Knox County plated three runs courtesy of three consecutive errors by the Lady Tigers.

SCR-I cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning when Dochterman tripled to lead off. She scored when Loren Smith reached on an error. Sites followed with a double but the Lady Tigers stranded the runners in scoring position.

Dochterman made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when she reached on a fielderís choice and scored on a base hit by Smith.

All four runs scored by Knox County were unearned. Lister limited the Lady Eagles to four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Game three was a slugfest with Schuyler County ultimately ending up on top by a score of 9-8.

The Lady Rams went on top 1-0 in the first and threatened again in the second before Alderton gunned down a runner at the plate.

An error opened the door for a big third inning as the host squad tallied five more runs to pull ahead 6-0.

SCR-I answered four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Oldham reached on an error to start the rally. Christina Duzan was hit by a pitch and Elizabeth Small then reached on an error to make it 6-1 as Oldham scored. The third Schuyler County error of the inning allowed Elizabeth Duzan to reach base safely and load the bases. A walk to Dochterman forced in another run. Alderton reached on a fielderís choice and recorded an RBI before Smith delivered the fourth run courtesy of a base knock.

An RBI double by Oldham in the fourth inning opened the door for a pair of tallies as she came around to score on a hit by Small to make it 7-6.

Schuyler County added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to lead 9-6.

The Lady Tigers rallied in their final at bat. Lister and Dochterman started the inning with base hits. Smith delivered a one-out hit to make it 9-7. Caldwell reached on an error that allowed Dochterman to score. Oldham followed with a base hit to load the bases. But Smith was erased at the plate when Christina Duzan grounded out to the short stop and SCR-I left the bases loaded as Alyssa Greenstreet struck out the final batter to preserve the 9-8 win.

Caldwell went the distance for SCR-I on the mound. She allowed nine hits and walked three while striking out six.

SCR-I saw its record go to 5-11 on the year. The Lady Tigers are 3-2 in league play with conference games with North Shelby and Schuyler County wrapping up the regular season this week.
