Long Ball Leads Lady Tigers Past Highland in Tourney Opener
Kelly Lister crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning but the Lady Tigers had to rally in their final at bat to avenge the season opening loss to Highland by besting the Cougars 6-5 in the opening round of the Knox County Tournament on Saturday.
After shutting down Highland in the top of the first, Lister put her squad on top 2-0 when she belted a shot over the fence in left-center field to make the score 2-0. The blast plated Elizabeth Small who had reached on a single.
Highland cut into the lead in the top of the first but SCR-I averted major trouble by getting out of a bases-loaded jam. A single and a pair of walks had the bases jammed. After one run was in, the Lady Tigers turned a double play on a bunt. The lead run was forced at the plate and the third out was recorded at third base.
The Cougars took the lead in the top of the third when Highland catcher Ashley Runquist crushed a two-run home run to make it 3-2.
SCR-I tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame. Small singled and moved up on a walk to Deidra Dochterman. Valerie Oldham delivered a two-out hit to plate Small.
Highland went ahead 5-3 in the top of the fifth. A one-out triple came into score on a passed ball making it 4-3. After a walk and single put runners in scoring position, SCR-I recored the second out of the inning when Lister gunned down the runner at the plate. But one insurance run scored on a wild pitch and when the throw to the plate from the catcher got away from Lister, the other runner slid in ahead of the throw. But she never tagged the plate, and was called out, keeping the score at 5-3.
Skyler Alderton started the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Back-to-back singles by Small and Dochterman loaded the bases for Lister. She reached on a fielderís choice and an error on the Highland pitcher, allowing Alderton and Small to score to tie the game. With no outs, Highland elected to walk Oldham intentionally to load the bases. Jessica Sites flew out to right field, but an errant throw to the plate allowed Dochterman to come in to score the winning run.
Small went 3-3 at the plate with three runs scored to pace the offense. Lister was 1-3 with the 2-run dinger. Oldham was 1-2 with an RBI and Dochterman went 1-2.
Lister gave up six hits over five innings of work and walked three. She struck out three en route to her first win of the year.
