Indians Continue Dominance of Rock Rivalry With 51-0 Win

The thrill of the opening weekís last-second victory at Salisbury was put to bed early in week two as the Scotland County Tigers ran into powerhouse Clark County. The state ranked Indians handed SCR-I its first loss of 2008 by a final score of 51-0.

Clark County took the opening kickoff. After an incomplete pass on first down, the Indians needed just two more plays to open the scoring. All-state running back Javis Vineyard put his team in scoring position with a long run and then Ethan Allen connected with Bryan Plenge on a 35-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick by Kolt Kiger made it 7-0 with 11:19 left to play.

SCR-I went three and out on its first possession. The Indians blocked the punt attempt and Lynn Williams scooped up the loose ball and scampered 31 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was no good leaving the score at 13-0 with 8:59 left in the first period.

Scotland County again went three and out on offense. Just two plays after the punt, Clark County was again in the end zone. Allen hit Matt Morrow with an 11-yard scoring pass. The PAT failed leaving the score at 19-0 with 6:23 still left to play in the first period.

An SCR-I turnover on the next possession was quickly capitalized on by the Indians. Allen threw his third TD pass of the first period when he connected with Mason Owen on a 27-yard scoring play. Kigerís kick made it 26-0 with 5:21 on the clock.

The Indians defense forced another three and out for the Tigers. Clark County scored on the first play after the punt as Vineyard took a screen pass from Allen all the way to the end zone. But the play was called back on a penalty. A flag cost the Indians a second TD during the series, but Vineyard finally crossed the goal line for good on an eight-yard run. The PAT failed, giving Clark County the 32-0 advantage with 2:03 remaining in the first period.

SCR-I failed to move the chains on the next possession, and Clark Countyís special teams came up big again. Vineyard returned the punt 48 yards for a touchdown. Kiger hit the kick to make it 39-0 with 11:43 remaining in the second quarter.

Scotland County again went three and out versus the tough Indians defense. Vineyard picked up his third score of the evening, with his second rushing TD of the night making the score 45-0 with 7:01 to play in the first half.

After SCR-I fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Clark County made its last scoring drive of the night. Justin Alderton capped off a two-minute Indians drive with a nine-yard TD run. The PAT failed, making the score 51-0 with 5:37 left in the opening half.

The second half featured a running clock as both squads turned the play over to reserves.

Scotland County finished the night with just 38 yards of total offense that netted only two first downs. Quarterback Kyle Shelley ran the ball 13 times for 22 yards. He completed two of five pass attempts for 11 yards. Caleb Kittle and Sabe Sears had the receptions. Logan Brassfield carried the ball eight times for eight yards.

Clark County needed just 19 first downs to rack up the eight touchdown-performance. Vineyard carried the ball seven times for 80 yards and two TDs. Alderton had 49 yards and a TD on eight attempts. Allen completed seven of 11 passes for 162 yards and three TDs. Owen had three grabs for 64 yards and a TD while Morrow made three grabs for 58 yards and a score.

Caleb Kittle led the Tigers defense with five tackles. Bradley Hamner and Brandon Garnett each had four stops.

The Tigers drop to 1-1 on the year while the Indians improve to 2-0 and maintained the Rock traveling trophy for another season. The winner of the Clark County vs. Scotland County football team is honored with the Jason Rockhold memorial trophy.
