Brashear Rallies To Best Lady Tigers 16-15 in Home Opener

A night after being shutout in Highland in the season opener, the Scotland County softball team brought its bats to the home opener versus Brashear.

Unfortunately a big offensive performance wasnt enough as SCR-I fell to Brashear 16-15.

The visitors jumped out to an 8-0 advantage in the opening frame. Starter Kaitlin Caldwell was hampered by several defensive miscues behind her and a tight strike zone behind the plate. Brashear took advantage of three SCR-I errors and six base on balls to build the lead.

Scotland County cut into the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Skyler Alderton started the inning with a triple. She scored on a passed ball. Elizabeth Small singled but was erased trying to steal second base. Deidra Dochterman walked and came into score on a double by Kelly Lister. Caldwell drove her home with an RBI single to make it 8-3.

Caldwell retired the side in order in the second inning and the Lady Tigers bats went back to work.

Alderton hit her second triple in as many innings. She scored on a base hit by Small. Back-to-back doubles by Dochterman and Lister made it 8-6.

Caldwell finished her night by blanking Brashear again in the third frame.

Her teammates completed the rally with fourruns in the third inning. SCR-I took advantage of five walks, with the big blow being delivered by Valerie Oldham who doubled with the bases loaded to make it 10-8.

Kristan Kaldenberg took over on the mound in the fourth inning and saw the lead slip away as Brashear plated three runs to pull ahead 11-10.

SCR-I failed to score in the fourth inning but Kaldenberg kept the Lady Tigers close, retiring the side in order in the top of the fifth.

Scotland County regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dochterman walked to start the rally. After a single by Lister and walk to Caldwell loaded the bases, Jessica Sites delivered a base hit to plate two and make it 12-11 in favor of Scotland County.

Kaldenberg struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning before SCR-I added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Small started the inning with a double. She scored on a base hit by Dochterman. After Lister walked, Oldham contributed another double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 15-11.

But the lead evaporated in the top of the seventh inning. Brashear scored five unearned runs, all with two outs, off Lister who came in to relieve Kaldenberg. The rally came courtesy of two walks, two hit-batters and an error.

SCR-I was retired in order in the bottom of the inning to allow Brashear to hold on for the 16-15 win.
