Lady Tigers Blanked in 2008 Softball Season Opener
The bats were silent for Scotland County in the 2008 softball season opener at Highland on August 25th.
Highlandís freshman hurler Julie Schultz had a lot to do with that. The youngster struck out 13 batters and allowed just three hits over seven innings to pick up the victory for the Cougars.
Schultz struck out the side in the top of the first inning before the Cougars bats went to work in the bottom of the frame. Highland strung together four hits in the opening frame of SCR-I starter Kelly Lister to jump on top 2-0.
Lister calmed down after the rough start, blanking Highland over the next four innings to keep SCR-I close.
She started the top of the second inning with a base hit but was stranded on second base.
Jessica Sites walked to open the third frame for SCR-I but never got past first base as Shultz made it seven strikeouts through the first three innings.
The Lady Tigers were retired in order over the next three innings.
Christina Duzan singled to start the sixth inning but Shultz again stopped the scoring threat by retiring the next three batters.
Kaitlin Caldwell got the Lady Tigers third and final hit, a two-out single in the seventh.
Highland broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning. A pair of two out walks set the stage for Jessica Murfin who delivered her second hit of the night to plate the first runner. A pair of Scotland County errors allowed the final two runs to score to make it 5-0.
Lister took the loss, despite allowing just three earned runs over seven innings. She walked four and gave up six hits while striking out four.
