Cotton Finishes 13th in State High Jump Championship

The bar was set high and those lofty heights may be around for a while. Penneyís Lindsay Vollmer won the Missouri Class 2 state high jump title, clearing 5-feet, 4-inches. Vollmer, a freshman, took home top honors from Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, besting the 15-member field on Friday, May 16th.

Melissa Cotton of Scotland County finished tied for 13th place. She cleared 4-feet, 8-inches but failed in three attempts to raise the bar. The SCR-I junior had jumped 5-feet at the district and sectional meets to qualify for state.

Lisa Vengels, a senior from Dixon, cleared 5-feet, 3-inches to earn second place.

Chelsey Hainen, a junior from Tipton, Brooke Hamilton, a junior from El Dorado Spring, and Kelsey Butler, a junior from South Harrison, all tied for third place by clearing 5-feet.

Anna Bumgarner (senior, Sparta) Paige Kruse (senior, Cuba) Abby Roland (junior, Macon), Bailey Addison (senior, St. Maryís) Elizabeth Tiggs (junior, Maplewood-Richmond) Rosemary Semke (sophomore, Orchard Farm), and Rose Searcy (junior, Orchard Farm) all cleared 4-feet, 10-inches to tie for sixth place.

Vollmerís performance helped Penney claim the team title with a total score of 77. The amazing freshman broke two state records on her way to claiming three state titles, narrowly missing out on a fourth.

She jumped 18-feet, 7.25 inches to shatter the state long jump record, which had been 18-feet, two-inches.

She also set a new state best in the 300-meter high hurdles, taking first place in 44.08 seconds.

Vollmer had to settle for second place in the 100-meter hurdles, giving her a total of 38 points, which would have been good enough to finish in second place overall in the team competition.

North County Tech earned second place behind Vollmerís Penney squad with a score of 43. The Crystal City was third with 36 points followed by St. Maryís (Independence) and Macon with 25 points each.

Katie Evans of Putnam County won the discus with a throw of 140-feet, one-inch. She also took top honors in the shot put with a heave of 46-feet, 7.25 inches. The junior helped lead her team to a sixth place finish.
