Johnston, Cotton Qualify for Sectional Track Competition
A pair of Scotland County track athletes took one step closer to qualifying for the state meet, with top four finishes at the Class 2 District 2 track meet held at Centralia High School on May 3rd.
Kirsten Johnston took third place in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:34.81. Sierra Angell of Fayette won the event in a time of 2:32.49 followed by Elizabeth Russell of South Shelby in 2:32.84. Also qualifying for the sectional race was Mary Van Ingen of Milan.
Top four finishers in each district event qualified to compete in the Class 2 Section 1 Meet to be held Saturday, May 10th at Principia High School.
Johnston will be joined by teammate Melissa Cotton who qualified with a third place finish in the high jump. She cleared 5’0. Kati Reys of Putnam County won the event by clearing 5’1. Also clearing 5’ was Abby Rowland of Macon. Rounding out the top four was Katie Gladback of Marceline.
The two third place finishes earned six points each for the Lady Tigers team score.
Johnston took eighth place in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:06.94 to earn one team point.
The SCR-I 4x800 relay team of Cotton, Kelsey Frazier, Ashley Tague and Sydney Priebe finished seventh to earn two points.
Scotland County finished 10th in the 16-team field with 15 points. Macon finished first with 98 points followed by Centralia with 87 and Putnam County and South Shelby tied for third with scores of 83.
