Douglas Sets New Series Record En Route to City Bowling Title

Ducks are known to swim, fly south and enjoy wabbit season. But on April 6th one local waterfowl became famous for bowling. Shawn Duck Douglas earned a spot atop the all-time leader board at Scotland County Lanes with his performance at the Memphis City Bowling Tournament.

Douglas not only won the event by nearly 100 pins ahead of the runner-up, but in doing so he set a singles series record with a 792 over the three games.

Douglas, whose handicap, ranked just 12th out of the 46 participants, gives some of the credit to his strong performance to his brother-in-law.

Clint VanGorkom finished second in the event, pushing Douglas to his top performance.

He was talking to me a lot, so I was pretty determined to bowl well, Duck said. But with his handicap, I knew I was going to have to bowl a 700 series to beat him.

Actually a 700 wouldnt have won the event. With a 42 handicap, Douglas combined his 792 score for a final tally of 834. VanGorkhom bowled a 506 and with a 235 handicap, scored a 741.

Gloria Dooley took third place in the 46-bowler field. She bowled a 604 scratch to put up a 727. Ken McMinn bowled a 638 to score a 713 and a tie for fourth place with Paul McDaniel, who bowled a 641 scratch.

VanGorkhom got a little revenge, earning the overall crown in the city tourney, combining scores for singles, doubles and team performances. His total score was a 2186. Douglas was second with a 2089. Rounding out the top ten were McMinn (2080), Dooley (2037) Jennifer Talbert (2032), Lezah Glover (2032), Nancy Hirner (2001), Pee Wee Parrish (1996), Scott Goff (1988) and Sheree Prebe (1983).

RC Seppelt and OJ Simpson took top honors in the doubles event with a score of 1411. VanGorkom and Tami Seppelt finished second with a 1384. Robert Arnold and Garry Talbert were third at 1342 followed by Parrish and Kathy Doss with a 1330 and Sheree and Mike Prebe with a 1305.

The Decrepit Truckers captured the team title, besting the 13-squad field with a 2716. Harrys Team was second (2684) and U.S. Banks team was third (2623).
