Johnston Helps Lady Tigers Outlast LaPlata on Senior Night
Scotland County closed out the regular season with a victory but it took lots of hard work by the Lady Tigers who struggled through a difficult shooting night to best LaPlata 36-30 on February 21st in Memphis.
SCR-I sent lone upperclassman Kirsten Johnston out in style with a victory on senior night despite shooting just 25% from the field.
“It wasn’t the prettiest game we’ve played all year,” said coach TJ Young. “But we scrapped for four quarters and we came out on top. We ended the regular season on a high note and sent our senior out well at home.”
Johnston started her final home game in style, opening with a pair of field goals on the fast break to build a quick 4-0 lead and force a LaPlata time out.
Melissa Cotton broke a 6-6 tie with a three pointer and Ashley Tague hit a jumper to put SCR-I ahead 11-8 to end the first period.
Buckets by Kelsey Frazier and Betsey Kittle made it 15-10 early in the second period. But both squads struggled to put up points the rest of the way as Scotland County led 15-12 at the intermission.
Johnston scored on the fast break to start the third period. But LaPlata went on a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the night midway through the quarter.
Buckets by Valerie Oldham and Cotton kept the game tied before LaPlata pulled ahead 24-21 to end the period.
Johnston trimmed the deficit with a steal she took coast-to-coast for the score to start the fourth period. But SCR-I still trailed midway through the final period despite field goals from Frazier and Tague.
Johnston regained the lead for good with a three pointer with 4:24 left in the game to make it 30-28. She scored on a steal and fast break opportunity before Frazier sealed the win with a bucket on an offensive rebound. Oldham added a field goal late as SCR-I ran out the clock.
Johnston led Scotland County (9-14) with 14 points. Frazier finished with 6 points and also grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds.
