Musgroveís 37 Points Not Enough As Tigers Fall to Canton in Triple Overtime

Basketball fans that just canít seem to get enough of the game, had to leave the Scotland County R-I gymnasium on February 19th with a sense of satisfaction.

SCR-I and Canton combined to give the large crowd not one, not two, but three over time periods before the contest was finally settled. Unfortunately for the home crowd, SCR-I dropped the contest 83-81.

Minus starting point guard Andrew Duley who was out with the flu, coach Ryan Bergeson went with a big line-up, inserting senior Joe Spurgeon into the starting line-up. That move paid immediate dividends as Spurgeon scored six points in the first period.

But Canton built a 17-16 lead to end the first period.

Both teams slowed down offensively in the second period.

Cody Musgrove scored all 10 points for SCR-I as the Tigers knotted the score at 26-26 at the intermission.

The Tigers nearly matched that output with a huge third period. Musgrove continued to dominate the inside game as he added eight more points. Brandon Garnett hit a pair of three pointers and Travis Trueblood also connected from behind the arc as Scotland County pulled ahead 49-43.

After a quiet start, Cantonís Drew Ayers came to life in the final eight minutes of regulation. He poured in 10 points down the stretch to help Canton tie the game at 60-60 and force overtime.

Colt Carper, who has been a thorn in the Tigers season in all three matchups this year, once again had a big game off the bench. He hit a key three pointer in the first overtime that kept the score knotted at 66-66 after the first three minutes of extra play.

Garnett hit a clutch three pointer and Cody Musgrove knocked down two crucial free throws as both teams managed just five points each in the second overtime.

Things heated up in the third overtime. SCR-I had held Cantonís top scorer Justin Ellison in check for the first 38 minutes, but he came alive in the final three minutes, hitting three field goals.

Musgrove matched that performance but a three pointer by Josh Fellinger put Canton ahead for good as they held on for the 83-81 victory.

Musgrove finished with a career-high 37 points on the night. Garnett had a season-best 18 points, including five three pointers. Kyle Shelley pitched in with eight points for Scotland County (8-15).

Carper led Canton with 24 points. Fellinger had 18 points while Ellison finished with 16 points and Ayers added 14 points.
