Indians Stay Unbeaten in League Despite Tigersí Gritty Performance

At 1-2 in league play already, Scotland County had little to gain Thursday night in Kahoka. Pitted against the undefeated Indians, all the Tigers had on the line was pride. But that was nearly enough to fuel the upset, as Scotland County took the likely conference champs to the wire in a gutsy performance.

The Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the first period leading to a quick timeout by coach Ryan Bergeson. Baskets by Kyle Shelley and Cody Musgrove stopped the initial run but Clark County still led 12-4 before Brandon Garnett nailed a three pointer to trim the deficit.

Clark County opened the second period in similar fashion, pushing the lead to 19-7 before Shelley scored in the paint with 5:49 on the clock.

Musgrove then hit back-to-back shots before Shelley connected again to make the score 19-15 and force a Clark County timeout with 3:49 to play in the first half.

The Indians regained the momentum with a 6-0 run before Travis Trueblood scored on a fast break. Garnett hit another three pointer before Musgrove grabbed an offensive rebound and scored just before the buzzer to cut the Clark County lead to 25-22.

The rally came full circle at the start of the third period when Musgrove scored in the paint. A jumper by Garnett put SCR-I ahead 26-25 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. The two teams traded buckets and the lead much of the rest of the period. Musgrove tied it at 32-32 with a basket at the 1:19 mark. But Clark County closed on a 5-0 run to lead 37-32 at the end of three.

That trend continued early in the final quarter. A driving score by Travis Trueblood was the only bright spot as Clark pulled ahead 44-34.

After Shelley scored in the paint, Trueblood hit back-to-back shots to put the pressure on the Indians. A three pointer by Andrew Duley made it 50-43 with 2:09 to play. After Clark County missed a pair of free throws Shelley made it 50-45 with a score in the paint with 1:19 to play.

Musgrove scored in the final seconds before Clark County added a pair of free throws to make the final margin 53-47.

Clark County improved to 12-5 and 5-0 in the Tri-Rivers Conference. Bryan Plenge led the Indians with 21 points.

Musgrove led Scotland County (7-11, 1-3) with 18 points. He also got the job done on defense, nearly hitting double digits in blocked shots while holding Clark Countyís Colt Summers to 11 and Michael Brennan to eight. Shelley finished with 10 points and Garnett added eight.
